This website is dedicated to the farmers of Crawford County Ohio.
I grew up in Crawford County. While we were not farmers ourselves, we obviously had farmers all around us. I had gone to school at Colonel Crawford where many of the students were from farming families. Directly behind our property was a farm. I remember during my childhood watching the tractors, plows, and other huge farm equipment go by, right behind our house. It was always exciting as a child to watch the corn or beans being harvested. I especially enjoy the old wooden barns that you see around the county. I fear that we are losing these gradually and wanted to create a website to preserve some of those images of them. It has been a lot of fun driving around the county, talking to the farmers and taking photos of their barns. I have arranged the website by township. I hope you enjoy the photos! Finally, after I had driven all over Crawford County, I expanded my website to include barns in other counties in Ohio, which are arranged in alphabetical order by county. See the heading "Other Ohio Barns." I often included (and labeled) Pennsylvania barns, which were those generally built by settlers from Pennsylvania, who typically were of German ethnicity. These barns were banked on one side with a ramp (or built on a hill) and had a forebay (overhang) on the other side. Bill Hartman |
